ABSTRACT

Introduction. Objective: To investigate the experiences of women hospitalized for high obstetric pregnancies at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Santiago, Chile. Material and Methods: This study corresponds to a qualitative, exploratory investigation in which the data collection was carried out by the application of in-depth interviews to 10 hospitalized pregnant women at high obstetric risk of a public hospital in Chile. Results: In the obtained results it was possible to distinguish the fear, anguish, feeling of confinement, lack of autonomy and uncertainty as negative experiences within the hospitalization. On the other hand, there were also experiences of support, feelings of security, positivism and hope, aspects that made this process more bearable. Some women initially expressed negative bias toward the public hospital in relation to care, infrastructure and service management. However, it was seen that during the hospitalization these prejudices changed, feeling satisfied with the service and care. Conclusions: Hospitalization is observed as an experience of safety and confidence for its pathology, parturition and extrauterine adaptation of the fetus. Likewise, a large majority of pregnant women took refuge in faith in God to overcome this process.
