ABSTRACT

The clinical picture that now we know as hepatitis associated with parenteral transmission was recognized more than 100 years ago. It is believed that the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects to near 3% of population worldwide. In Mexico the prevalence is approximately 1%, which accounts for 1 million affected individuals. The chronic infection with HCV can originate hepatic cirrhosis and eventually hepatocelular carcinoma. The current treatment is far from being perfect, obtaining 40% to 60% of elimination of the circulating virus, depending on the genotype.del genotipo.
