ABSTRACT

Introduction: The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is the speed with which anticoagulated red blood cells sediment in a period. Objective: To compare the Wintrobe method and the micromethod (Mmethod) for the determination of ESR in children and adolescents, to determine the cutoff point or reference value of ESR in children and adolescents obtained by the Mmethod. Material and methods: The study was descriptive, correlational, field and cross-sectional. The statistical tests used were Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Student’s t test, Pearson correlation, Bland-Altman plots, Lin’s concordance coefficient and COR curves. Results: Lin’s coefficients were between 0.79 and 0.93, and the reference values (mm/h) with the best sensitivity and specificity found for the ESR by the Mmethod were 8.5 (all); 9.5 (male) and 10.5 (female). Conclusion: The agreement between the methods evaluated was between poor and moderate. In addition, the transfer of the reference value of the Wintrobe method to that of the Mmethod produces a decrease in the diagnostic sensitivity of the Mmethod.
