ABSTRACT

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the protozoan Plasmodium spp. Inoculated into the human host by a feeding female Anopheles mosquito; corresponds to an endemic infection in tropical regions. Severe malaria infection is usually associated with Plasmodium falciparum. We present the case of a female patient in first trimester of pregnancy, who returns from a trip from Ghana, Africa; with symptoms of vaginal bleeding, fever and malaise, which is admitted to the hospital to complete studies. The diagnosis of severe infection with P. falciparum is made and intravenous administration of antimalarials is initiated.
