ABSTRACT

Cholelithiasis is a relatively rare disease in children, but it is found more often in patients with predisposing disorders. It is rare to see it before adolescence and it is asymptomatic, reaching a prevalence of 0.5 % (according to Spanish authors) and up to 1.9% (according to American authors). There are few reported cases. Case presentation: Full-term female 17-hour-old newborn; she was moved from a regional hospital for exchange transfusion because of generalized jaundice (Kramer V). Hyperbilirubinemia at the expense of direct bilirubin was reported; an abdominal ultrasound reported cholelithiasis. Conservative management was given with choleretics, and the patient evolved favourably. Conclusions: Neonatal cholelithiasis is rare; its clinical manifestations are varied and nonspecific. Unlike in children and adolescents, its management in newborns is nonsurgical in most cases.
