ABSTRACT
Objective. Identify effectiveness of the coconut water in the oral rehydration therapy.
Material and methods. A cases-controls study was made, matched 1:1, in 170 children under 5 years, admitted to the hospital for acute diarrhea. They were divided in two groups: The group of cases was treated with coconut water and the control group with oral rehydration solutions recommended by OMS/UNICEF.
Results. The coconut water effectiveness was seen in 64.8% children under 1 year, while the OMS/UNICEF effectiveness was 62.3% in the controls. In 96.3% of the cases and 63.5% of the controls in the case group was effective in the dehydration prevention. In the treatment of the dehydration was effective in the 72.7% of cases and in the 81.8% of the controls. Had a coconut water good acceptation in the 87.3% of the cases and the OMS/ solution acceptation in the control group was in 50.8% 21.2% of the controls showed osmotic diarrhea.
