Frequency of congenital malformations in newborn infants in the General Hospital of Mexico

ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the frequency of congenital malformations in recently born alive of the General Hospital of Mexico.
Material and methods. During 3 years they were captured those recently born ones alive with external congenital malformations, grouping for apparatuses and systems, comparing our results with that reported in the literature.
Results. Of a total of 22,771 alive births, 226 cases were captured of recently born with external congenital defects (0.99%). It prevailed in the feminine sex (52.7%). Of term they were 67% and preterms 33%. In the classification for apparatuses and systems, the but affected it was the digestive system with 38.9%, in second place the malformations of the nervous system with 15.9% and in third place the genopathies with 15.0%. In global form the associate malformations occupied the studied population’s second place.
Conclusions. The congenital malformations constitutes a significant problem of health in our country, some differences were observed in the prevalence of congenital malformations, prevailing in our population the feminine sex, being the defects of the digestive system those but you frequent, however the defects of the tube neural continue occupying an important place.
