ABSTRACT

Introduction: stomatological attention to pregnant women is essential due to different factors that can accelerate the progression of initial or established diseases. The use and abusive prescription of various medications for systemic use in stomatology represents a major problem in public health and a challenge to professional improvement programs that seek to correct inappropriate behavior and vices of over-prescribing.
Objective: to evaluate a program of complementation on the prescription by stomatologists of drugs to pregnant women.
Method: the evaluation of a supplementation program was carried out in 18 stomatologists of the Jiguaní municipality, in the period June 2013- December 2015. Initially, a questionnaire was applied on general knowledge of prescription and its particularities in pregnant women. Based on the diagnosed learning needs, an approved and planned supplementation program was developed according to the established regulations, regarding the postgraduate teaching activities. Finally, an exit questionnaire was applied to compare changes in the level of knowledge.
Results: the application of the initial questionnaire showed that 38.9% of the sample had a high knowledge about generalities of prescription, as well as an initial absence of high knowledge about prescription characteristics in pregnant women. When evaluating the final results of the intervention, it was found that 83.4% of professionals reached the category of high or medium knowledge.
Conclusions: the evaluation was effective and therefore the feasibility of continuing education directed to prescribers is confirmed.
