ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cystic renal lesions are a common incidental finding in abdominal CT. Most of them have a benign appearace. However, there are no studies to show the prevalence of such lesions in Mexico. Objetive: The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of cystic lesions in Northwest Mexico.
Method: Abdominal enhanced CT scans were analyzed in this study.
Results: A prevalence of cystic renal lesions was found to be up to 12% of the reviewed scans, among which there is greater prevalence in males as high as 67%. According to the used classification, 99% of these lesions were considered simple cysts and follow-up studies were not needed.
Discussion and conclusions: The prevalence of cystic renal lesions in the Mexican population is relatively common and similar to previous descriptions in the English medical literature. Most of the lesions are simple of the Bosniak classification and no follow-up is needed.
