ABSTRACT

Introduction: Liver transplantation is a highly effective procedure in chronic and acute irreversible liver diseases, in which there is no satisfactory therapy, with 85% survival results at one year and 75% at 5 years in several transplant centers. The availability of organs for transplantation is essential to improve the quality of life and / or survival of patients, a high percentage dies before entering the waiting list or being in it. In 2015 there were 357 patients on the waiting list and 151 were transplanted, the rest would be transplanted in 2.3 years without mentioning the actual number of patients that require a transplant. We are faced with several challenges such as the lack of financial support and institutional commitment, insufficient infrastructure and shortage of donors. Of the 72 hospitals authorized to practice transplants, only 2% carried out 10 or more transplants and 63% remained inactive.
