Organ and tissue donation for transplant purposes, what a doctor in training should be aware of

ABSTRACT

Organ donation is an altruist act, which may help to improve the life quality of people suffering from some kind of organ or tissue failure. Given the shortage of organs and tissues for transplantation, it is necessary to implement strategies that promote the culture of organ donation. One of this strategies, is a proper education and a positive attitude from medicine students towards organ donation, in order to create agents of change in favor of this act. This article presents relevant information for medical students who are currently in their universities and especially for those who are participating in a hospital internship, about the processes of organ and tissue donation, the concept of brain death, the identification of potential organ donors, the donation request interview, the process of procurement and distribution of organs and tissues, and the dignification and delivery of the corpse to the donor family. Health care professionals must be experts in the area of organ and tissue donation. Therefore, to educate the future physicians about the process of organ donation is an important factor to positively impact in the donation culture.
