ABSTRACT

In Mexico, there are no tools to assess the psychosocial needs of children facing a diagnosis of cancer. The present investigation aimed to develop a tool that would allow identifying and prioritizing the psychosocial needs of this population. The developed tool was used with 24 hemato-oncology pediatric patients between 4 and 17 years old who receive treatment in a Hospital belonging to the Secretary of Health of Mexico City. The preliminary results revealed that the priority needs for the patients were: receiving information and explanations of their illness, procedures and treatment, parent company, safety and protection, continuity in their schooling, family visits and being with their siblings; while the least important were: familiarity with the hospital and hospital decoration.
