ABSTRACT
Introduction: Inguinal plasty is the most common procedure in general surgery, because inguinal hernias are the most frequent of the abdominal wall (58.5%); classified as direct, indirect, mixed and femoral, by classifications, incluiding Nyhus.
Objective: We describe the characteristics of inguinal hernias and repair according to the type with Nyhus classification.
Material and methods: Retrospective, observational and descriptive study of records of patients diagnosed with inguinal hernia undergoing inguinal hernioplasty in two years in HGSZ #30 IMSS. Variables analyzed: age, gender, type of hernia according to Nyhus classification, surgical technique and complications.
Results: 114 patients with inguinal hernioplasty were operated on in two years. Age of highest prevalence, 61 to 80 years of age (40%), male patients 92.4%, 45.7% with the most frequent type, IIIb of Nyhus classification, and on the right side in 65.7% of patients. The Lichtenstein-type plasty was the most used in 64.7% of patients. Complications in 14 patients, most often hematoma (5.7%).
Conclusions: Inguinal hernias are more frequent in men between the fifth and seventh decade of life, type IIIb of Nyhus is the most frequent and the Lichtenstein procedure is the most used.
