ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the predominant genotypes of rotavirus and the cases of hospitalizations due to intussusception in children under one year of age, based on data published by the National Health Information System (2000-2015).
Materials and Methods: Observational, retrospective and analytical study carried out based on information from the Instituto de Diagnóstico y Referencia Epidemiológicos (InDRE) to determine circulating rotavirus genotypes. The cases of intestinal intussusception in children under one year were obtained from the dynamic cubes of the Dirección General de Información en Salud, Secretaría de Salud.
Results:In the period analyzed, there was predominance of the G1 genotype, especially in 2000-2005. In different years other strains predominated: G2 in 2006, 2011 and 2012, G3 in 2008 and 2009 and, in addition, G9 in 2010. The G12 strains were the predominant ones from 2013. The cases of annual rotavirus hospitalization were: 522 in 2004 and 273 in 2012, with a peak of 1071 in 2007. In 2011, the maximum number of reported cases (n = 1037) of intussusception was reached, with a downward trend since then.
Conclusions: The circulating rotavirus genotypes in Mexico have variability. During the studied period hospital discharges of patients diagnosed with intestinal intussusception decreased. The number of these cases reported in Mexico decreased compared to that registered in the official databases of previous years.
