ABSTRACT

Myocarditis is clinically and pathologically defined as an inflammatory myocardial disease diagnosed with histological, immunological and immunohistochemical criteria. In medical practice, physicians rely on the combination of clinical manifestations, laboratory analysis, and cardiac imaging findings for the diagnosis of myocarditis. The definitive diagnosis is made by endomyocardial biopsy. Myocarditis may spontaneously reverse, recur or become chronic, leading to about 33% of the cases tested with biopsy to dilated cardiomyopathy. The medical treatment is based on hemodynamic stability, cardiac function and the arrhythmias presented during the course of the disease. We report the case of an 18-year-old male patient with acute myocarditis associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia.
