ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the clinical and diagnostic issues at the entrance to the hospital of children with systemic erythematosus lupus (SEL), as well as the diagnostic exams by the diagnosis was confirmed and about their evolution and treatment.
Material and methods. The clinical files of 26 patients with SEL were revised; they are the total seen in the hospital and the last 28 years (1979-2005). Information of the files was obtained in regard to: age, sex, family and personal backwoods, clinical features, exams done, treatment and evolution of the patients.
Results. The rate males/females was of 1:2.7 (19/7). The diagnosis at entrance was: collagenopathy in eight; in four the following ones left: hemolytic anemia, purple chronic thrombocytopenic, illness of Kawasaki and extensive miocardiopathy. The clinical signs were, in order of frequency: fever, artralgias, eritema malaria, edema and vasculitis, photosensitivity and migraine. The immunological markers allowed to confirm the diagnostic to the entrance in 24, in two cases they were negative, and after being splenectomized they developed lupus. The basic treatment was with prednisone, aspirin and chloroquine; nine developed renal lesion. Five of them died.
Conclusions. Our experiences are close to other reports, but in the way that there has been better procedures for the diagnosis in the hospital, and better treatments, the prognostic and survive of the patients has been improved
