ABSTRACT

In Mexico in 2015 the population aged 60 years and over was 12.4 million, this represents 10.4% of the total population. In the last decades this percentage has been increasing and according to the projections of the population it is estimated that it will increase to 14.8% in 2030. Acute abdominal pain is after chest pain and respiratory distress the third most common cause in the emergency rooms, in these patients, the diagnosis has become a challenge, given the greater frequency of atypical presentations, comorbidity and the proper conditions of aging. Recent studies have shown an increase in the number of visits to the emergency department in this population, in addition to being associated with a longer stay in the emergency room, a higher percentage of admissions and more complex evaluations with a greater number of complementary tests. important to establish a screening in order to select the high-risk patient with acute abdominal pain and reduce the cost that this entails, and avoid being subjected to catastrophic expenses. Currently, economic evaluations to support decision-making in health is a practice that has taken on increasing strength worldwide. This is due to the limitations of resources, budget deficits, and the high cost of medical care for society, as well as allowing us to evaluate not only the effectiveness of new technologies, but also their efficiency.
