Relationship between lipid peroxidation and glycemic parameters in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a health problem due to its prevalence and impact of its complications. Chronic hyperglycemia leads to advanced lipoxidation compounds formation which modify intracellular metabolic pathways. Objective: To relate lipid peroxidation with glycemic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients. Material and methods: An analytical, cross-sectional study, which aimed at relating lipid peroxidation and glycemic parameters in type 2 diabetic patients from Camagüey province, was carried out from October 2016 to February 2017. The universe consisted of 60 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who attended the Provincial Center for Diabetic Patient Care and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria established by the research. The variables evaluated were: fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and malondialdehyde. Results: Glycemic parameters were altered in 55.0 and 61.7% of cases according to the values of glycemia and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) respectively. Malondialdehyde exhibited an average of 6.5 µmol/L and showed a statistically significant relationship (p = 0.009) only for HbA1c. Conclusions: Glycemic parameters were altered in more than half of the cases statistically significant and directly proportional relationship between HbA1c and lipid peroxidation was found.
