ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mexico harvests 30% of the livers from its cadaveric donors, well below the statistics of other countries.
Material and methods: This is an eight year retrospective review evaluating the number of harvested livers in the state of Yucatan.
Results: 86 multi organ procurement surgeries were performed: 47 viable livers, 36 harvested livers, 11 livers declined by every transplant group in Mexico (23%). Of the 36 harvested livers: 80% were sent to a public institution, 77% were sent within the Mexican Republic and only seven livers were transplanted in Yucatan. 83% of the livers were procured by a single local surgeon in Yucatan.
Conclusions: There is a lack in the use of the resource of a vital organ of 23% with a potential for immediate growth if all existing viable livers are used. The above can be achieved by local procurement teams, as well as a reviewing the current criteria in the procedure for distribution and allocation of deceases donor livers.
