ABSTRACT
Odontogenic myxoma is considered a benign tumor with aggressive biological behavior. That incidence is of approximately 17.7% of all odontogenic tumors, mainly in females with a 1.5:1 frequency. In head and neck occurs almost exclusively in maxilla and mandible, the latter being the most frequently affected, mainly in the molar region. Surgical management reported in the literature ranges from conservative therapy, consisting of enucleation and curettage to en bloc resection with tumor free edges. This lesion has a high rate of recurrence (25%), and this fact is mainly associated with choosing a conservative management of it. We present a case of a 53-year-old female patient with a left maxillary swelling, that was diagnosed as odontogenic myxoma, for which she underwent left hemimaxillectomy. The surgical management is discussed. In conclusion, the most appropriate management for this type of pathology depends on the size and location, but en bloc resection followed by reconstruction is the best option to reduce the possibility of recurrence.
