ABSTRACT

Introduction. The identification and validation of competences is presented as one of the biggest challenges faced by professionals worldwide; education by competences is a clear need in this society of knowledge, which needs to be studied, to know it, understand it and in this way adapt it to clinical practice, to obtain successful results. Objective. Validate the competency profile for orthodontics based on Alexander discipline, which will serve as a clinical guide for the orthodontist to raise the standard of quality not only in clinical patient care, but also in the personal, professional and interdisciplinary field. Methods. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out to validate the 221 competences using the Cronbach’s alpha. Results. The average of affirmative responses obtained from the congruence of the competences to the Alexander discipline was 80%, the Cronbach’s alpha was 0.997, which indicates a very high consistency, competences were classified as indispensable, necessary, recommended and not necessary, obtaining for most competences a classification of indispensable to necessary. Conclusions. The competences identified will serve to raise awareness of the importance of developing skills, detect areas of opportunity, adopt proactive attitudes that increase employability and therefore with success in professional life, it is widely recommended to conduct comparative studies among various orthodontic techniques that are practiced nationally and internationally; with this study the Alexander Discipline is positioned as a pioneer in transferring its philosophy to a structure of teaching by competences.
