ABSTRACT
Introduction: Dr. Vicencio Tovar is one of the most recognized doctors in the country, for his professional career, his academic achievements, the recognition of multiple societies, committees and national and international councils where not only militia, but directed, being the most important the Mexican Academy of Surgery. Material and methods: A documentary research is carried out, gathering the Curriculum Vitae of Dr. Vicencio Tovar, documents and certificates that the Vicencio family keeps, as well as documents and records of the historical archive of the Graduate Course in General Surgery of the Secretary of Health of Mexico City. Dr. Alfredo Vicencio Tovar was born on January 2, 1929 in the ranch «La Fe» or San Antonio in the municipality of Xonacatlán, State of Mexico, Dr. Vicencio Tovar lived his childhood in the neighborhood of Mixcoac, in the colony San José Insurgentes. He entered the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1946 and received the title of Surgeon in 1952 when he presented his thesis entitled «traumatismos de mano». He entered the specialty of General Surgery at the headquarters of the Red Cross, in Mexico City in 1954. By 1960 he entered the hospital «Dr. Rubén Leñero», holding several positions, among which stand out as Belly Surgery, Intensive Therapy, Head of Operating Room and Head of Service of the Emergency Unit. During his working years in the Hospital «Dr. Rubén Leñero» founded the postgraduate course in general surgery in the now Secretary of Health of Mexico City and in 1977, gets recognition by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He held multiple positions in the Mexican Society of Gastroenterology since 1963 and was president of the same in 1983. He entered the Mexican Academy of Surgery in 1973, which after much work and climbing through multiple positions, reached the Presidency in 1996. Conclusions: To know the life of Dr. Alfredo Vicencio Tovar, is to know the life of a great man and professional who was and continues to be a great example for all surgeons. During his life he learned endless knowledge and secrets of surgery, which he then shared without hesitation to more than 500 disciples distributed throughout the Mexican Republic and abroad, in different positions and institutions. Dr. Vicencio was an academic father, colleague, friend, companion, who always sheltered with his wisdom and great human qualities.REFERENCES
