ABSTRACT

Childhood obesity is constantly increasing and without our intervention these tendencies will prevail in adolescence and adulthood. It is important to note that lifestyle habits play a key role in the development of this disease, and here the consumption of water is included to favor proper hydration. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in México has been related to the high consumption of high energy drinks that are sweetened, favoring positive energy balances resulting in an increase in body weight. Therefore, highlighting the importance of water as an essential nutrient is fundamental to generate awareness in our population, emphasizing its multiple functions, both metabolic and nonmetabolic, and pointing out the consequences of its deficit. It is proven that the substitution of sweetened drinks by water prevents the appearance of diseases such as obesity and its complications; there is also evidence that water consumption helps control and maintain body weight, or its loss in the short and medium term. Finally, knowing the water requirements for our population, as well as the existing strategies and what we can contribute to improve their consumption will have a positive impact on the growth and development of our children and adolescents.
