ABSTRACT

Objective. To identify the prevalence of bullying among children and adolescents attending the Teletón Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRIT) in Quintana Roo, by applying a standardized psychometric test.
Materials and method. A cross-sectional study was conducted with fifty-nine patients from CRIT Quintana Roo aged seven to eighteen years, using the Bullying and School Violence test. Children and adolescents enrolled in school from the second year of elementary school to the third year of high school were included; children without disabilities and who were not CRIT patients, who at the time of the study were not enrolled in school, who were younger than seven or older than eighteen years of age, or who belonged to lower grades of second grade of elementary school or older than third grade of high school were excluded. Descriptive statistics and frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the results.
Results. It was identified that 35,59% of patients experienced bullying at school; the most prevalent disabilities were: mild brain injury (33,0%), neuromuscular diseases (29,0%), spinal cord injury (19,0%) and osteoarticular diseases (19,0%).
Conclusions. Children and adolescents with mild brain injury and neuromuscular diseases at CRIT Quintana Roo have experienced bullying. It is considered necessary to pay attention to this social phenomenon by raising community awareness to include programmes aimed at promoting and protecting the school inclusion of children with neuromusculoskeletal disabilities. As well as promoting spaces for dialogue or training for teachers and other professionals on the different physical conditions that are attended to in child rehabilitation centres.
