Caleidoscopic approaches against Chagas disease

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Chagas disease issue is a complex socio-environmental issue which is depicted by factors from biomedical, epidemiological, sociocultural and politician fields that interplay dynamically. Objective. The main goal of the present work is to summarize interdisciplinary approaches against Chagas disease, which look for understand social representations and stigmas associate to Chagas. Materials and methods. Here we show a series of experiences from an interdisciplinary perspective developed by ¿De qué hablamos cuando hablamos de Chagas? working group. These experiences coordinate different arts, sciences and knowledges looking for overcome simplistic approaches such as sick vs. healthy, richness vs. poverty, rural living vs. urban living, among other dichotomies. Results. From our experiences, main results point out the great variety of stigmas and prejudices associate to Chagas disease not only among society, but also among health professionals. Discussion. Currently, Chagas socio-environmental issue is placed at a great variety of epidemiological scenarios beyond of rural and Latin-American landscapes. Because of that, implementation of health promotion strategies that approach Chagas disease in an interdisciplinary way is urgent. Health promotion strategies encouraging respectful dialog among different knowledges, cultures and lifestyles, could contribute to remove stigmas and prejudices in socio-environmental issues such Chagas disease. Conclusion. We hope to motive interest to critically reflect about Chagas disease strategies developed not only in Argentina and Mexico, but also in the world. We hope to be proximate to design and develop health public politics, health communication and promotion strategies effective and sustainable to long term; until one day Chagas disease would not be longer a health public issue.
