ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the impact of an educational intervention that showed students the internal contamination of dental handpieces (DHPs) using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence. Material and methods: We conducted a convenience sample study including undergraduate dental students, who answered a confidential, self-administered questionnaire with closed-format questions about their perceptions and knowledge before and after an educational intervention presenting ATP results on DHPs contamination. Results: The before and after questionnaire survey revealed a positive change in the students’ perceptions on the importance of DHPs reprocessing (100% response rate). Conclusion: This educational intervention using ATP to demonstrate internal contamination successfully changed the perceptions and knowledge of dental students on the importance of DHP reprocessing. ATP can be applied to demonstrate internal contamination in DHPs.
