Key words:

Alopecia areata, vitamin D deficiency.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune and multifactorial disorder mediated by an infiltrate of T lymphocytes that lead to the collapse of the immune privilege. It has been described that vitamin D deficiency causes a loss of its immunomodulatory effect, acting as a risk factor for the appearance of alopecia areata. Objective: To compare the levels of 25(HO)D2 of patients with alopecia areata against a healthy control group, and the possible association with the levels of 25(HO)D2. Material and methods: We included 50 patients with alopecia areata and 50 healthy control patients from February 1, 2018 to October 1, 2018, measured the severity of the alopecia areata by means of SALT and the levels of 25(HO)D2 by immunoassay. Results: The mean of the levels of 25(HO)D2 in the alopecia areata group was 12.84 ± 2.6 ng/mL and in healthy controls of 23.5 ± 4.19 ng/mL, finding a significant difference in the levels of groups, without relation to the degree of severity. Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency could be a risk factor for the onset of alopecia areata. No relationship was found between SALT and vitamin D levels.
