ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the experience of the authors in the use of caudal anesthesia for anorectal surgery.Design: Longitudinal, descriptive and observational study.
Setting: Third level health care hospital. Method: We studied consecutive patients programmed for anorectal surgery. Caudal anesthesia was used. The following variables were analyzed: Gender, number of cases per year, analgesic level obtained: excellent, incomplete, failure; morbidity.
Results: Between January 1991 and December 1998, we studied 362 patients subjected to anorectal surgery; 208 were men and 154 were women. In 337 patients (93.1%) the analgesic effect was excellent, in 18 patients (4.9%) it failed, and in 7 patients (2%) it was incomplete. Morbidity was of 1.3% (5 patients), consisting of urinary retention episodes. No deaths occurred.
Conclusion: Caudal block as anesthetic procedure for anorectal surgery is efficient and safe.
