ABSTRACT
Objective: To report our experience with trans-surgical cholangiography during laparoscopic surgery of the gallbladder and biliary tract.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Retrospective, observational study.
Patients and methods: We analyzed the clinical files of 188 patients who had been subjected to cholangiography during laparoscopic surgery of the gallbladder in a 4 years and 2 months period, from a universum of 1221 cholecystectomies. Three techniques were used for the trans-surgical cholangiography: Transcystic, cholecystocholangriography, and direct puncture on the biliary tract. We analyzed the following variables: age, gender, indication for the cholangiography, result of it, duration and morbidity.
Results: Most patients were women (155), the other 33 were men. Ages ranged from 15 to 92, with an average of 47 years. From the 188 cholangiographies, 180 were useful for diagnosis and the other eight not; 21 revealed pathology, 18 revealed choledocolithiasis, 3 were false positives, and the remainder 159 were normal. Average duration of the cholangiography was 30 min for the first 50 subjects and 15 min for the remainder. The procedure did not cause morbidity.
Conclusion: Trans-surgical cholangiography is a useful procedure for cholecystectomy through laparoscopic approach.
