ABSTRACT

Asymptomatic microhematuria (AMH) is defined as 3 or more erythrocytes per field in urinary sediment microscopy in the absence of an obvious cause. For this finding, among the most common causes in adults are urinary tract infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia and kidney stones, however the possibility of malignancy must always be taken into account dependent of the patient risk factors. As for the approach, for initial assessment, rule out benign causes and microscopy urinalysis is essential. Regarding the diagnosis, it is necessary to use imaging studies, being CT Urography the most recommended and in patients with some risk factor for malignancy, cystoscopy should also be performed.
