Text Extraction

Objective: To describe the life of Vladimir P. Demikhov.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Biographical study.
Result: The first half of the XX Century was characterized by important developments in the areas of physiology and surgical techniques, providing the bases for what we now know as “Modern Surgery”. Demikhov is among the forgotten pioneers of high specialty surgery that are routinely performed in our days. He dedicated all his professional life to the development of thoracic surgical procedures. His experimental work included mainly the creation of an artificial heart system, the use of staples for vascular anastomosis, coronary revascularization surgery, and cardiopulmonary transplants. Although unknown for many, his research complemented the initial works of Carrel, giving rise to the possibility of performing open-heart surgery and transplants.
