ABSTRACT

Fat embolism is the obstruction of the blood vessels by fatty globules, as a consequence of fracture of long bones, or multiple fractures and even extensive wounds. Fat embolism can trigger fat embolism syndrome in a small group of patients, it can produce severely progressive symptoms. In the absence of early diagnosis and timely treatment, the patient may die. There are two theories about the pathophysiology of the disease, which explain the characteristic symptoms that are the classical triad (respiratory failure, neurological deficit and petechial rash). A series of criteria are used for diagnosis in conjunction with imaging and laboratory studies. Treatment is complex and varied among the different intensive care units, and the greatest challenge is to achieve a timely diagnosis.
