ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine if it is an association between of urinary infection and septicemia in newborns with septicemia.
Material and methods. 110 septicemic newborns were studied in order to identified whos were infected in the urinary tract. The urine was obteined by suprapubic (PSP). A general examination of the urine was done.
Results. Only 14 of the newborns had urinary infection. The frequency of germs which were identified were:
Escherichia coli in six,
Klebsiella pneumoniae in four,
Candida albicans in 3 and
Enterobacter aerogenes in one, in 3 patients urine and blood culture were (both) positives to the same germ:
Escherichia coli.
Conclusions. The association of urinary infection and neonatal septicemia neonatal, was found in 3.6%. The suprapubic aspiration of urine is a easy, fast, aseptic and reliable to confirm the diagnosis of urinary infection.
