ABSTRACT
Type I spinal muscular atrophy is a degenerative illness of the motoneurons from the anterior portion of the spinal cord, the damage is initiated during fetal life affecting the proximal voluntary muscles, without the compromise of sensibility. There are 4 typical histopatological features and a characteristic clinical presentation that is not patognomonic.
None typical signs are seen in 15% of patients. The diagnosis is made by laboratory and radiological workup. An effective treatment does not exist, and its prognosis is very poor. We present a case considered atypical.
