ABSTRACT

Objective. To determine the utility of the octreotide as part of the medical treatment of acute pancreatitis in children.
Material and methods. Were included 20 patients, 12 male (60%), and 8 female. All of them all received the usual management for pancreatitis and a dose of octreotide 60 μg/m2) twice a day, subcutaneously.
Results. The pancreatitis postraumatic was the principal aetiology in 14 (70%), in 6 the cause it was undetermined. The activity of amylase and lipase change decreasing significantly from the beginning to end. The diagnosis was done by tomography in 17 patients (Balthazar classification). The mortality was 20%.
Conclusions. Because there was not a comparison group it is not possible to say that octreotide could be used in children with pancreatitis) it is necessary an aleatory study to determine their utility in the treatment of this disease.
