Malnutrition frequency in children attending to preschool learning centers

ABSTRACT
Objective. Determine the prevalence of malnutrition in children of the Preschool Learning Centers belonging to the Family Integral Development Program (PLC-FID).
Material and methods. 286 preschool children from the learning centers were measurement for weight, height and the circumference of their arms, using a three colored tape. The variable malnutrition was evaluated with the indicators of the score z of weight for the age, the arm circumference and the Gomez classification.
Results. According to the Gomez classification 107 (37.2%) the children presented a minor malnutrition and 22 (7.6%) moderate malnutrition with the colored tape 46 (16%) presented minor malnutrition and 18 (6.3%) moderate malnutrition. Moreover, 26.4% presented some form of malnutrition when compared to the age and weight indicator.
Conclusions. The prevalence of malnutrition is high, taking in to account the attention that received that the children, which were evaluated.
