ABSTRACT

Objective. To evaluate the utility of the C-reactive protein (CRP) blood as an index of asphyxia in the newborn evaluated by method of Apgar.
Method. 108 infants were selected with register of Apgar. To all they were measured the level-blood of the CRP into the 6 hours of life. Three homogeneous groups were created, matched up by age, being constituted in the following way: group I (control) with score of Apgar similar or up to 7 the minute of life and with pH › 7.2; group II with score of Apgar below 6 the minute 1 of life and with pH › 7.2; group III with score of Apgar below 6 the minute 1 of life and with pH › 7.2. The mensuration of the CRP was into first 6 hours, later to the birth. So much the determination of the pH like of the PCR it was in blood of the umbilical cord.
Results. There was not statistical significance in the blood level of the CRP among the group with score of Apgar below to 6 and pH › at 7.2 with the group control, during the study p = 0.5. While among the groups with scores of Apgar below or equal to 6 and pH ‹ at 7.2 and the group, control existed a significant statistical difference (p ‹ 0.01). In a same way it happened among the groups II and III, although in this case result to be smaller (p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions. The blood level of CRP doesn't have a direct correlation with the scores of low Apgar, when the value of the pH in blood of the umbilical cord is superior to 7.2 units. For what the determination of the CRP can be used as an indirect index of asphyxia, together with other indicators, in those infants with antecedent of low Apgar.
