ABSTRACT
Introduction: The combined use of gait retraining with robotic orthoses and functional electrical stimulation with wireless devices are uncommon treatments in our environment, although there is evidence of its effectiveness. The objective of this study was to describe the response to combination treatment with these modalities in a pediatric patient with cerebral palsy.
Material and methods: A physical therapy program was implemented in a child with PC using bilateral wireless FES devices placed on the peroneal nerve along with robotic orthotic gait retraining in conjunction with a motor control program, performing functional and strength assessments.
Results: After treatment, gross motor function increased by 6.17% in GMFM-88, selective control of the lower limb assessed with SCALE increased by five points, and in the evaluation with the use of the dynamometer, an increase in hip and knee flexion strength was reported.
Conclusions: The patient showed an improvement in functionality, strength and motor control with the combination of treatment used, however, the cost of the equipment makes it difficult to use this therapeutic strategy widely, it will be necessary to assess in a larger sample its benefits and cost effectiveness.
