Un llamado a la interacción social durante la vejez

RESUMEN

El envejecimiento es un proceso complejo que no solo implica cambios biológicos y funcionales, sino también transformaciones en la esfera social. En esta revisión abordamos el papel fundamental que juegan la interacción social, la soledad y el aislamiento en la salud integral de las personas mayores. A partir de la evidencia más reciente, analizamos cómo la soledad y la desconexión social actúan como factores de riesgo para el desarrollo y agravamiento de enfermedades cognitivas, metabólicas y cardiovasculares.
La activación crónica del eje hipotálamo-hipófisis-adrenal, la inflamación sistémica, la disfunción mitocondrial y la regulación epigenética de la respuesta inmune emergen como mecanismos fisiopatológicos clave vinculados al aislamiento social. Además, exploramos cómo la calidad y cantidad de las relaciones sociales influyen en la trayectoria cognitiva, la percepción del entorno y la resiliencia ante eventos adversos en la vejez. A partir de estos hallazgos, proponemos líneas de acción orientadas a fortalecer la inclusión social de los adultos mayores, incluyendo el fomento de actividades intergeneracionales, el uso de tecnologías digitales, la participación comunitaria y el apoyo emocional. La evidencia acumulada apunta a una conclusión clara: la interacción social no es un lujo, sino una necesidad biológica y un determinante de salud pública. Reconocerla como tal es esencial para garantizar un envejecimiento digno, activo y saludable.
