El propofol ha dejado de ser solamente un hipnótico intravenoso de inicio rápido y recuperación predecible. En la anestesiología actual, su valor reside en que permite hacer un ejercicio explícito de farmacocinética, farmacodinámica y lectura neurofisiológica. Ya no solo debemos preguntarnos «¿cuántos miligramos administrar?», sino «¿qué concentración objetivo persigo, en qué compartimento, con qué velocidad de aproximación, bajo qué patrón electroencefalográfico y en qué paciente?». Ese cambio conceptual redefine al propofol como una herramienta de precisión.
