De acuerdo con el informe: «Acción global sobre nacimientos prematuros» realizado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud el 2 de mayo del 2012 en Nueva York, se afirma que cada año unos 15 millones de bebés en el mundo, más de uno por cada diez nacimientos, nacen demasiado pronto.
