RESUMEN

Objetivo: determinar la prevalencia del síndrome de intestino irritable en el adulto que acude a consulta externa de la Unidad de Medicina Familiar 53 del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, en León, Guanajuato.
Material y métodos: adultos de 20 a 49 años de edad que asistieron a la consulta externa de la unidad, a quienes se les realizó una encuesta para diagnosticar síndrome de intestino irritable de acuerdo con los criterios de Roma II.
Resultados: se estudiaron 246 pacientes; 85 (35 %) tuvieron diagnóstico de síndrome de intestino irritable; 18 pacientes (21 %) fueron hombres y 67 (79 %) mujeres; ocho pacientes (9 %) tuvieron síndrome de intestino irritable con predominio de diarrea, 41 (48 %) con predominio de estreñimiento y 32 (42 %) con síntomas alternos.
Conclusiones: la prevalencia del síndrome de intestino irritable en los adultos estudiados fue de 35 %, siendo más frecuente con predominio de estreñimiento.
