RESUMEN

La fibrilación auricular es la arritmia más frecuentemente diagnosticada, afecta millones de pacientes y debido a sus complicaciones lleva a un aumento de mortalidad. El amplio espectro de sus presentaciones clínicas así como los mecanismos fisiopatológicos subyacentes explican las diferentes formas que existen de prevención y tratamiento. En este artículo hacemos énfasis en aspectos de la FA que continúan siendo controvertidos a través de los años como son: la clasificación, los mecanismos electrofisiológicos, los subgrupos clínicos especiales y las complicaciones de la misma.
