ABSTRACT

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequently recognized arrhythmic diagnosis, affects millions of patients and due to its complications leads to an increased mortality. The broad spectrum of clinical presentation as well as the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of AF explains the different ways of prevention and treatment of AF. In this paper we focus on the classification, electrophysiological mechanisms, special clinical subgroups and complications of AF as these aspects for years continue to be the subjects of controversies.
