ABSTRACT

In this article we describe a case of accidental gastrointestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Eristalis tenax in Costa Rica. This insect belongs to the order Diptera, Syrphidae of the family; the larvae are known as worms mouse tail. Intestinal myiasis associated with E. tenax are rare in humans and other vertebrates. We report a case in a patient 23, who has nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. In serial analysis of stool samples for the presence of mouse tail larvae of E. tenax it is macroscopically observed, with a typical morphology. After several serial analyses, the patient continues to excrete these larvae in their feces. Food intake and / or contaminated water are the possible cause of this infestation.
