ABSTRACT

Introduction. The Body Mass Index (BMI) also called the Quetelet Index (IQ) is a measure (kg/m2) used as an indicator of weight adequacy for a given height. The resulting value is interpreted as, an indicator of different nutritional situations both physiological (normal weight) and pathological (low weight, overweight and obesity).
Material and methods. Descriptive observational epidemiological study of a cross- section without directionality and with prospective temporality. In the period from July 1 to December 31, 2018, 83 students of the high school "Francisco Javier Mina" were evaluated. As a hypothesis test or statistical significance test, the Ji–Cuadrado statistic of Mantel and Haenszel (x²M–H) was used. The software Epi Info for Windows, version 7.1.4.0, was used to obtain the values of the χ2M–H statistic and the probabilities.
Results. In 29 (34.9%) and 7 (8.4%) students were found pathological nutritional situations "underweight", and "overweight or preobesity", respectively. In 47 (56.6%) students the nutritional situation was found "normal weight". Discussion. the statistical comparison of the prevalence rate of the pathological nutritional situation "overweight or pre obesity" with the corresponding prevalence rates of the "Wenceslao Alpuche" Primary School, the "Miguel Hidalgo" Primary School, and the "Technical Secondary School No. 8 "not finding statistically significant differences.
Conclusion. It is concluded that the students of the secondary school "Francisco Javier Mina" present health problems regarding their nutritional situation since 43.37% presented the pathological nutritional situations "underweight" and "overweight or preobesity".
