ABSTRACT

Introduction. Cardiovascular diseases represent a serious public health problem in the world and in Mexico, as they are related to the increase in overweight and obesity, and are a cause of morbidity and mortality.
Objective. To describe the frequency of cardiovascular risk factors in university health science professors at a university in southeastern Mexico.
Materials and method. A cross-sectional and descriptive study, 31 teachers were clinically interviewed and evaluated to obtain data on family, lifestyle, anthropometric, blood pressure and fasting glucose risk factors. The type of sampling was non-probabilistic for convenience; the data collection instrument used was the “Risk Factors Questionnaire” of the Mexican Ministry of Health. The descriptive statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS statistical package version 22 in Spanish.
Results. Sixty four percent (n=20) of teachers were at high risk for diabetes; with respect to high-risk lifestyle, inadequate diet was found in 32,26% (n=10), lack of exercise in 48,39% (n=15) and stress in 61,29% (n=19) of the sample. Likewise, the risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease in women was 77,27% (n=17) and 88,89% (n=8) in men; in general, 80,65% (n=25) of the sample had a high risk of suffering from this type of disease.
Conclusion. Hereditary family history, overweight, obesity and lifestyle are high cardiovascular risk factors in teachers. Lifestyle, inadequate diet, poor physical activity and stress influence the increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
