ABSTRACT

Introduction: Breastfeeding, as well as be the method of infant feeding safer and healthier, it is the least expensive. The institutional budget for the consumption of breast milk substitutes represents a potential economic expenditure, which can be reduced through the implementation of programmes that promote exclusive breastfeeding (EB). The objective of this study was to describe the consumption and cost of breast-milk substitutes, to identify the potential economic savings in the medical units of the Institute of Security and Social Services of the State Workers (ISSSTE) in Quintana Roo.
Material and methods: Observational, longitudinal and descriptive study of use of breast-milk substitutes from January 1 to December 31, 2014. The data were obtained using the data base of the Integral System of Drug Supply.
Results: The annual consumption of breast-milk substitutes in the units of the ISSSTE in Quintana Roo represents a real institutional expenditure of $289.068.75 pesos. Chetumal’s Clinic Hospital is the only medical unit that develops a program of EB, where is reported savings of $39.267.84 pesos in 2014.
Conclusion: Strategies aimed at mothers, family and health personnel to promote the EB have a benefit on the health of the mother and infant, and allow savings of pocket family expenditure and institutional expenses. This represents a strategy to decrease the consumption of sweeteners and breast milk formula in the medical units of the national health system.
