ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the frequency of the breast pathology in ultrasound-guided fine leedle aspiration cytology and the number of inadequate samples.
Material and methods: 56 ultrasound-guided FNA cytology were review in the Department of Cytopathology of the “Dr. Manuel Gea González” Hospital.
Results: 21 cases were inadequate (37.5%), 8 cases were carcinomas (14.28%) and 26 were benign lesions (46.4%). Ultrasound made the diagnosis of 11 carcinomas, only 6 cases had cytologic correlation, and the other 5 were inadequate samples. 28 of the 35 adequate samples had cytologic-ultrasound correlation.
Conclusions: The main problems in the cytologic diagnosis are the inadequate samples, therefore it should be made an effort to get an adequate material with a better ultrasound-guided FNA cytology technique, specially in the impalpable lesions, because it a determinant factor to get a precise diagnosis.
