Wilms’ tumour. Experience in the diagnosis and in the treatment of 19 children

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate Wilms’ tumor at the Hospital infantil del Estado de Sonora, during 10 years from 1987-1997.
Patients and methods: 19 patients were studied: age at diagnosis, sex, clinical presentation, histologic types, stage, treatment, and results of treatment.
Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 3 years 6 months (range 5 months to 11 years).
The most common symptom at diagnosis was abdominal mass. The histologic types were considered: favorable 14 (73.6%) and unfavorable 5.
Two patients relapsed and die with tumor 6 and 17 months after diagnosis, and 17 patients achieved complete remission, the survival event free disease was of 89.5%. The medium follow up is 50 months (range 19-127 months).
Conclution: Wilms’ tumor has a high survival rate. This study confirms the excellent survival in children with Wilms’ tumor.
